Aaron Dontez Yates, known by his stage name Tech N9ne, is a Kansas City rapper, songwriter, producer, entrepreneur, and actor whose career has helped redefine what an independent hip-hop artist can achieve. He has developed one of the most distinctive voices in American rap while maintaining strong creative control over his career.
Born on November 8, 1971, in Kansas City, Missouri, Yates developed an early interest in music and performance. His childhood experiences, including the loss of close family members, later became important themes in his writing. During the early 1990s, he began building his reputation through Kansas City's underground rap scene, performing with groups including Black Mafia and Nnutthowze.
His professional career expanded through collaborations and appearances before he released his early independent material. In 1996, he released his debut album, “The Calm Before the Storm,” beginning a discography that would eventually stretch across more than three decades. A decisive chapter arrived in 1999 when Tech N9ne partnered with businessman Travis O'Guin to establish Strange Music. The company became the foundation of his independent career, giving him greater control over his recordings, touring, merchandising.
Albums such as “Anghellic,” “Absolute Power,” “Everready (The Religion),” “Killer, K.O.D., and “All 6's and 7's,” expanded his audience while maintaining the dark, technically demanding sound associated with him. Killer became a major commercial milestone, reaching the Billboard 200.
Collaboration has been another defining feature of his career. He has worked with artists including Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes, E-40, T-Pain, Boyz II Men, and many others.
